Refined Flour Adds Calories, Not Nutrition, Warn Experts

More News : Health experts have warned that excessive consumption of refined flour (maida) can be seriously harmful to the body. Maida is produced by processing wheat flour, during which its fiber and essential nutrients are removed. As a result, it loses almost all vitamins and minerals, providing only calories — hence called “empty calories.” Experts say maida neither sustains energy for long nor provides necessary nourishment.

Regular consumption of refined flour can cause a rapid spike in blood sugar levels, leading to insulin resistance — a major factor behind type-2 diabetes. Persistently high insulin levels also increase inflammation and oxidative stress in the body, raising the risk of several chronic diseases, including cancer. Studies suggest that excessive maida intake may be linked to a higher risk of colon and breast cancer.

To achieve its bright white appearance, maida is often bleached with agents like benzoyl peroxide, which are considered harmful chemicals that can impair liver function and weaken detoxification processes over time. Due to its lack of fiber, maida is also difficult to digest and can cause gas, bloating, constipation, and sluggish digestion. When digestion slows, waste accumulates in the body, potentially leading to other health issues.

Experts advise not to eliminate maida completely but to limit its intake and replace it with healthier alternatives like whole wheat, jowar, bajra, or ragi. A balanced diet rich in fiber, fresh fruits, and green vegetables can strengthen digestion and lower the risk of diabetes, obesity, and cancer.

In today’s diet, refined flour has become almost unavoidable — found in everyday foods like bread, pizza, burgers, samosas, and biscuits — consumed by people of all ages. However, mindful moderation and healthier substitutes can make a significant difference in long-term health.
