India Must Define Its Own Growth Path, Says Gautam Adani at IIT ISM

Jharkhand News : Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani on Monday emphasized that India must chart its own development trajectory in an increasingly fragmented global order, where nations are prioritizing self-interest and traditional alliances are weakening.

Speaking at the centenary celebrations of IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, Adani said that in the 21st century, a nation’s sovereignty depends heavily on its natural resources, energy systems, and technological capabilities. He asserted, “India must do what is in India’s best interest.”

Highlighting the institution’s legacy, Adani noted that IIT (ISM) Dhanbad was founded on a visionary idea laid nearly a century ago to strengthen India’s capabilities in mining and geology, critical sectors for national progress. “If we understand the resources beneath our feet and control the energy systems that power our growth, we build the foundations of true economic freedom,” he said.

Warning Against ‘Narrative Colonisation’

Adani cautioned against what he termed “narrative colonisation,” where developed nations—historically responsible for significant emissions—attempt to influence or limit the development choices of emerging economies.

He pointed out that despite India being one of the lowest per-capita carbon emitters globally and achieving over 50% non-fossil installed power capacity ahead of schedule, its performance is often undervalued under global ESG frameworks due to inherent international biases.

Focus on Energy Security and Renewables

Referring to the Carmichael coal mine in Australia, Adani said the project was undertaken to strengthen India’s energy security despite facing intense environmental and political opposition. He also highlighted the 30 GW Khavda renewable energy park in Gujarat, now partially operational, underscoring India’s commitment to sustainable energy.

Two Major Initiatives for IIT (ISM) Dhanbad

Adani announced two key initiatives for the institute:

  • 50 paid internships every year, including pre-placement opportunities

  • Establishment of the Adani 3S Mining Excellence Centre in collaboration with Texmin, featuring cutting-edge technologies such as a metaverse lab, drone fleets, seismic sensing systems, and precision mining tools

India’s “Second Freedom Struggle”

Calling the present moment India’s “second freedom movement,” Adani said this phase is about achieving economic and resource sovereignty. “Mining may be seen as part of the old economy, but without it, building the new economy is impossible,” he stated.

Concluding his address, Adani urged students to dream fearlessly, innovate relentlessly, and contribute as custodians of India’s core strengths in building a self-reliant nation.
