Jharkhand News : A heartbreaking incident was reported from Ranchi’s Kantatoli area on Tuesday, where two young brothers fell into a large open drain while playing. The younger child, aged around two-and-a-half years, died due to drowning, while the elder brother, aged about three-and-a-half years, was rescued by their mother.
According to local residents, the children were playing in an open ground close to their house—around 10 metres from the drain—when they slipped and fell in. On learning about the incident, the mother rushed to the spot and managed to pull out the elder child. However, the younger child had already gone deeper into the drain.
With the help of locals, the younger child was later pulled out and rushed to a private hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead. The elder brother received first aid and was sent home.
Police Action, Postmortem at RIMS
After being informed, the local police reached the site. Sadar police station in-charge Kuldeep Kumar said the body was sent for postmortem to RIMS Ranchi. Police stated that during drowning, the child may have ingested a large quantity of contaminated water, which could have contributed to the death.
Grief in the Locality; Safety Concerns Raised
The incident triggered grief across the neighbourhood. Residents said children are often seen near the drain and have been warned earlier as well. The tragedy has once again raised concerns over open drains and lack of protective covers, especially in residential areas.
