Jharkhand News : Chief Minister Hemant Soren on Wednesday reviewed the progress of the GIS-based Urban Management System project being implemented by the Jharkhand Urban Infrastructure Development Company (JUIDCO) under the Urban Development and Housing Department (UD&HD). The project is a significant initiative aimed at establishing modern, transparent, and data-driven urban governance across 49 Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) in the state.
During the review meeting, the Chief Minister was informed that Ranchi, Dhanbad, and Giridih Municipal Corporations have been selected as pilot cities for the project. Aerial LiDAR surveys have been successfully completed in all three municipal areas, while digital mapping, GIS layer creation, and data processing activities are currently underway.
Under the project, a geo-tagging-based property survey, comprehensive mapping of urban assets, monitoring of water bodies, and the development of an advanced GIS-based digital platform are being carried out. The system will enable accurate digital documentation of buildings, roads, streetlights, electric poles, water sources, and other urban infrastructure assets.
The Chief Minister directed officials to ensure that the project is completed within the stipulated timeline while maintaining high standards of quality. He said the initiative would provide a scientific foundation for urban planning and make the functioning of urban local bodies more transparent, efficient, and accountable.
Soren particularly emphasized the effective use of GIS technology for strengthening municipal revenue systems, improving asset management, and enhancing citizen services. He noted that the technology-driven approach would help local bodies make informed decisions and deliver better urban services.
The Chief Minister also instructed officials to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the lessons learned from the pilot phase and prepare a phased expansion plan for implementing the system across other urban local bodies in Jharkhand.
The meeting was attended by Minister for Urban Development and Housing, Higher and Technical Education, and Tourism, Art, Culture, Sports and Youth Affairs Sudivya Kumar Sonu; Development Commissioner Ajay Kumar Singh; Principal Secretary of Road Construction and Urban Development & Housing Department Sunil Kumar; Secretary of Planning and Development Department Mukesh Kumar; SUDA Director Suraj Kumar; and other senior officials.
