National Sports Day 2026: Why Is It Celebrated on August 29?

Jharkhand News : National Sports Day is being observed across the country today, August 29. The day is celebrated to mark the birth anniversary of India’s legendary hockey player Major Dhyan Chand, who is popularly known as the ‘Wizard of Hockey’. He was born on August 29, 1905.

The Government of India started observing August 29 as National Sports Day in 2012. The main objective of the day is to create awareness about sports among people, particularly young people, and encourage them to pursue sports.

Sports Events to Be Held Across Jharkhand

On the occasion of National Sports Day, sports and awareness programmes will be organised in Ranchi and various districts across Jharkhand. Players will be honoured during these programmes, while young people will be encouraged to participate in sports.

The day also provides an opportunity to highlight the contribution of sportspersons and promote greater interest in sports.

Major Sports Awards for Outstanding Players

National Sports Day is also associated with the recognition of India’s outstanding sportspersons through various sports awards. These include major honours such as the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award and the Arjuna Award.
