Sports News : The upcoming ODI series against Australia in October could possibly be the final international appearance for Indian ODI captain Rohit Sharma and veteran batsman Virat Kohli. This would effectively end their dreams of participating in the 2027 ODI World Cup, according to indications received from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
As per a recent report, both players have been informed that the Australia series might be their last opportunity to announce retirement. Initially, both were scheduled to play in a three-match ODI series against Bangladesh at the end of this month, but the tour was canceled. That leaves the Australia tour, where India will play three ODIs, as their only remaining assignment.
The team management has reportedly excluded both players from the 2027 World Cup plans, considering their age. BCCI has laid down a condition — if Rohit and Virat wish to continue in ODIs after the Australia tour, they must participate in Vijay Hazare Trophy, the domestic List A tournament, scheduled post-October. Failure to do so will likely confirm Australia as their final ODI series.
By the time the 2027 ODI World Cup is held in October-November, both players will be nearing 40 years of age, prompting selectors to focus on grooming younger talents. Virat has played in four World Cups, while Rohit has featured in three.
