Blood Moon on March 3: Lunar Eclipse Visible in India for 20 Minutes

More News : Skywatchers in India will witness a spectacular lunar eclipse on March 3, 2026, the first lunar eclipse of the year. However, the celestial event will have no impact on Holika Dahan or Holi celebrations, as Holi will be observed on March 2.

Visibility in India

According to astronomers, the eclipse will begin at 3:20 PM IST and end at 6:47 PM IST, lasting a total of 3 hours and 27 minutes.

However, in India, the Moon will rise at 6:26 PM, by which time the eclipse will be nearing its final phase. As a result, the phenomenon will be visible in the country for only about 20 minutes.

  • Maximum eclipse: 6:33 PM to 6:40 PM

  • Eclipse ends: 6:47 PM

What causes a lunar eclipse?

A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth comes between the Sun and the Moon, casting its shadow on the Moon’s surface. When the Moon is fully covered by Earth’s shadow, it can appear deep red in color.

A Stunning ‘Blood Moon’

This eclipse will appear as a “Blood Moon.” During a total lunar eclipse, sunlight passing through Earth’s atmosphere scatters shorter wavelengths and allows red light to reach the Moon, giving it a reddish glow.

The event can be safely observed with the naked eye, and no special protective glasses are required.

Astrological significance

Astrologically, the eclipse is said to occur in Leo (Simha Rashi) and the Purva Phalguni Nakshatra. Some astrologers advise individuals of this zodiac sign to be cautious about health and emotions. Scientifically, however, it remains a natural astronomical event.

Viewing tips
