India News : A shocking and shameful incident has come to light from Assam’s Cachar district, where a 28-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped by seven men near Silchar. The accused not only committed the heinous crime but also intimidated the victim and forced her to transfer money to one of their bank accounts. Police have confirmed the incident and said two accused have been arrested so far.
According to senior police officials, the incident occurred on February 19. The victim was with a male friend in a car on a bypass road a few kilometres from Silchar town when an SUV carrying several men arrived at the spot. After questioning the couple, the attackers allegedly assaulted them and forcibly took the woman away. The victim has stated that the men raped her one after another in front of her friend.
The victim also alleged that she was threatened and compelled to transfer ₹10,000 to the bank account of one of the accused. Following the incident, she lodged a police complaint. Her medical examination was conducted and her statement recorded.
A case has been registered at Silchar Sadar Police Station under multiple serious provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including:

Section 310(2) – Robbery

Section 308(5) – Extortion by threat to life

Section 79 – Outraging the dignity of a woman
Police said two identified accused have been taken into custody, while raids are underway to arrest the remaining suspects.
The case gained further attention after family members of the accused allegedly attacked a local journalist who was covering the incident. The journalist claimed he was assaulted near a National Highway police outpost, raising concerns over press safety and law enforcement.
Reacting to the incident, Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Dev met the Cachar Superintendent of Police and sought details of the investigation. She asserted that any attempt to suppress such a grave crime would not be tolerated and demanded the strictest punishment for those responsible.
The incident has sparked outrage across the region, with growing calls for swift justice and stronger measures to ensure women’s safety.
