Jharkhand News : Dhanbad witnessed a tragic incident on Tuesday evening when a sudden land subsidence destroyed two houses in the Tandabari settlement under the Sonardih OP area, killing three members of a single family.
According to local residents, a loud explosion-like sound was heard moments before the ground caved in, causing the houses to collapse within seconds. The suddenness of the incident left residents in shock, giving little to no time for escape. The victims were buried under the debris as panic spread across the area.
Villagers have blamed the incident on ongoing illegal coal mining in the region. They allege that continuous unauthorized excavation weakened the ground structure over time, ultimately leading to the collapse. The tragedy has once again raised serious concerns over unchecked mining activities in the area.
Following the incident, angry locals gathered and protested outside Sonardih OP, demanding accountability. Police and administrative officials rushed to the spot to control the situation and initiate rescue operations.
Teams from Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL), along with district authorities, launched an immediate rescue effort. The operation continued throughout the night and into early Wednesday morning.
After hours of intense effort, rescue teams recovered the bodies of three victims from the debris. The deceased have been identified as Monu Oraon, Geeta Kumari, and Sarita Devi, all belonging to the same family.
The bodies were sent to SNMMCH for post-mortem examination. A heavy police presence remained at the site, while grieving family members and locals gathered in large numbers, mourning the loss.
The incident has left the entire area in deep sorrow, with families devastated by the sudden loss. Meanwhile, questions are being raised about the role of authorities and BCCL in preventing illegal mining activities.
Residents argue that timely action against such operations could have prevented this tragedy. Authorities have assured that a thorough investigation will be conducted and strict action will be taken against those found responsible.
