Jharkhand News : Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren turns 51 today. He was born on August 10, 1975, in Nemra village of Ramgarh district. On his birthday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his greetings and wished him a long life and good health.
Hemant Soren is the son of Shibu Soren, a prominent leader of the Jharkhand statehood movement and a key leader of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM). He is currently serving as the Chief Minister of Jharkhand for the second time.
First Became Chief Minister in 2013
Hemant Soren first became the Chief Minister of Jharkhand in July 2013. His first tenure lasted until December 2014. Later, on December 29, 2019, he took oath as Chief Minister for the second time and has been leading the state since then.
After the JMM-led alliance won the 2019 Assembly elections, Soren returned as Chief Minister. He had been out of power following the 2014 Assembly elections but continued to strengthen his position within the party and organisation.
Education and Engineering Aspirations
Hemant Soren began his schooling at Central School in Sector 4, Bokaro. He later completed his matriculation from MG High School in Patna.
In 1994, he pursued ISC studies at Patna University. He subsequently enrolled in engineering at BIT Mesra but could not complete the course.
Soren was interested in engineering as well as photography and painting. He wanted to become an engineer but entered politics due to family circumstances.
Entry Into Student Politics
Hemant Soren began his political career through student politics in 2003. He later became president of the Jharkhand Chhatra Morcha.
In 2005, he contested the Dumka Assembly seat for the first time but faced defeat. On December 23, 2009, he was elected MLA from Dumka for the first time.
During the same period, he was also elected to the Rajya Sabha but resigned from the Upper House in January 2010. He subsequently became Deputy Chief Minister in the BJP government led by Arjun Munda.
Family Circumstances Changed His Political Role
Following the death of his elder brother Durga Soren and the ill health of his father Shibu Soren, Hemant Soren’s active role in politics increased.
He gradually strengthened his position within the party and emerged as a prominent leader in Jharkhand politics.
In 2013, he became Chief Minister for the first time. After losing power following the 2014 Assembly elections, he continued to consolidate his position within the party and organisation.
The JMM-led alliance’s victory in the 2019 Assembly elections paved the way for his return as Chief Minister for a second term.
On his birthday today, Hemant Soren is receiving greetings from several leaders across the country and Jharkhand.
