Jharkhand Metro Plan Gains Momentum for Ranchi, Dhanbad, Jamshedpur

Jharkhand News : The long-cherished dream of Metro rail connectivity in Jharkhand is moving closer to reality. Preparations for Metro rail projects have gained pace in Ranchi, Dhanbad, and Jamshedpur, bringing major relief to commuters in the state’s key urban centers.

Following in-principle approval from the central government, the revised Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) for Ranchi has been finalized. The process for preparing the Alternative Analysis Report (AAR) and Detailed Project Report (DPR) is now underway, which will determine the final alignment and structure of the Metro network.

🚇 51-Kilometre Metro Network Planned for Ranchi

As per the proposed plan, Ranchi will have a 51.3-kilometre Metro corridor across three routes:

  • Kachahari Chowk to Nayasrai – 16.1 km

  • Pahartoli to Namkum – 13.7 km

  • Kanke to Tupudana – 21.5 km

The network aims to connect nearly all major areas of the state capital. Officials estimate that more than 70,000 passengers could use the Ranchi Metro daily once operational.

📑 DPR and AAR Process Initiated

After the revised CMP was prepared as per central guidelines, Jharkhand Urban Infrastructure Development Company Limited issued tenders for the preparation of AAR and DPR for Ranchi. These reports will determine whether Metro corridors will be elevated or underground.

For Jamshedpur and Dhanbad, RITES Limited has been issued a Letter of Acceptance (LoA) to conduct AAR and DPR studies, though formal agreements are yet to be signed.

🏗️ Metro Project to Be Implemented in Phases

The Metro project will progress in a phased manner:

  1. CMP – Assessment of current and future mobility needs

  2. AAR – Comparative study of Metro, MetroLite, and BRTS

  3. DPR – Detailed planning of routes, stations, cost, and technology

🌱 Benefits of Metro Rail

  • Reduction in traffic congestion

  • Lower carbon emissions and improved air quality

  • Faster, comfortable, and affordable travel

  • Enhanced urban connectivity

  • Energy-efficient, zero-emission electric transport

🏛️ State Push for Central Approval

According to state officials, including Principal Secretary Sunil Kumar, the revised CMP for Ranchi was prepared following directions from the central government after a proposal by Chief Minister Hemant Soren. CMPs for Jamshedpur and Dhanbad will be prepared next, after which feasibility-based decisions will be taken by the Government of India.

If approved, the Metro rail project could mark a major transformation in Jharkhand’s urban transport infrastructure.
