Port of Marseille Fos Strengthens Role as Mediterranean Trade Hub

India News : The Port of Marseille Fos has reaffirmed its status as one of Europe’s most significant maritime and logistics hubs, playing a crucial role in enabling seamless global trade. France’s leading port handles nearly 74 million tonnes of cargo annually and records close to 10,000 vessel calls every year, underlining its scale and operational strength.

Spread across a vast 10,400-hectare industrial and logistics zone, among the largest in Europe, the port accommodates major global players across diverse sectors. Its activities span liquid and dry bulk, container traffic, Ro-Ro services, energy, industrial operations, and advanced ship repair facilities. A standout feature is Dry Dock 10, ranked as the third-largest dry dock worldwide, enhancing the port’s strategic importance in maritime maintenance and repair.

Marseille Fos functions as a fully integrated multimodal hub, connected via rail, river, road, and pipelines. This connectivity provides direct access to the French and European hinterland while linking Mediterranean trade routes efficiently with Northern Europe. The port serves over 15 million consumers in southern France and connects with more than 70 million people across the Rhône–Saône corridor and Western Europe.

The port’s influence is further strengthened by the MeRs axis (Marseille–Rhône–Saône), which brings together hundreds of companies and Europe’s leading inland logistics clusters. Through partnerships with inland ports and multimodal platforms, Marseille Fos supports coordinated logistics and greener supply chains.

Environmental sustainability remains central to its long-term vision. Over €1 billion has been allocated under the 2025–2029 investment plan to accelerate decarbonisation, expand shore-power infrastructure, and foster green industrial ecosystems, including renewable hydrogen, circular economy initiatives, and low-carbon manufacturing clusters.
