Jharkhand News : Abhishek Kumar, the main accused in the murder of Chaupati Restaurant owner Vijay Nag, was injured in a police encounter late Sunday night in the Kanke police station area of Ranchi. He sustained gunshot wounds in both legs and is currently undergoing treatment at RIMS Hospital.
According to police, Abhishek was attempting to flee the state with his family after allegedly shooting Vijay Nag dead inside his restaurant on Saturday night following a heated argument. The murder triggered widespread outrage among locals, who staged protests demanding immediate action.
With mounting pressure to arrest the accused, Ranchi SSP Rakesh Ranjan formed a special team. Acting on a tip-off, police intercepted Abhishek near the ITBP camp in Kanke. Upon being cornered, Abhishek reportedly opened fire on the police. In retaliatory firing, he was shot in both legs and subsequently arrested.
SSP Rakesh Ranjan confirmed that multiple checkpoints had been set up across the city to prevent the accused from escaping. Abhishek was spotted by Ratu police and chased until he was trapped and neutralized by Kanke police near the ITBP camp.
Police have also detained former policeman Harendra Singh and his driver for questioning in connection with the case. Preliminary investigation suggests that the murder may have been triggered by a dispute over biryani. However, police are probing other angles as well.
Notably, this is the fifth police encounter in Ranchi in the last 10 days where criminals have been shot and injured.
