Jharkhand News : More than half of the seats reserved under the Right to Education (RTE) Act for children from economically weaker and disadvantaged sections remain vacant in private schools across Ranchi even after the completion of the first phase of admissions. To fill the remaining vacancies, the district administration has launched the second phase of the admission process.
According to the District Education Department, 592 of the 1,147 RTE seats available in 116 private schools across the district are still vacant. Only 555 students secured admission during the first phase.
Kanke Has the Highest Number of Vacant Seats
Official figures show that Kanke block has the highest number of vacant seats, with 217 vacancies across 56 private schools. It is followed by Namkum and Nagri, with 89 vacant seats each. Other blocks with vacant seats include Ratu (59), Khalari (54), and Mandar (31).
In Chanho block, not a single student was admitted to two private schools during the first phase.
District Superintendent of Education Badal Raj said that, except for a few reputed schools in Ranchi, most private institutions receive insufficient applications, resulting in many RTE seats remaining unfilled.
Applications Open Until August 2
For the 2026–27 academic session, the district received 1,499 applications. After document verification, 1,036 applicants were declared eligible for the online lottery.
Eligible candidates can apply for the second phase through the official portal www.rteranchi.in until August 2.
However, no fresh applications will be accepted. Only those applicants who had applied during the first phase and were declared eligible after document verification can participate in the second round.
Online Lottery on August 5
The online lottery for the second phase will be conducted on August 5 at the Ranchi Collectorate to allot the remaining vacant seats.
Similar Situation Last Year
A similar trend was observed during the 2025–26 academic session. Of the 1,217 reserved RTE seats in 120 private schools, the district received 1,744 applications. After scrutiny, 1,057 applications were found valid, but only 672 students were admitted.
Officials said 93 seats in nine schools remained vacant as no applications were received, while 11 schools received more than 100 applications, highlighting the uneven demand for admissions under the RTE quota across private schools.
