Tata Main Hospital Marks World Breastfeeding Week 2026 with Awareness Drive to Bust Myths and Promote Breastfeeding

Jamshedpur News : Tata Main Hospital (TMH) has joined the global observance of World Breastfeeding Week 2026, being celebrated from August 1 to 7, reaffirming its commitment to promoting, protecting and supporting breastfeeding as the foundation of a healthy start to life.

This year’s theme, “Breastfeeding for a Sustainable Start in Life: Strengthen What Works,” highlights breastfeeding as one of the simplest, most effective and sustainable interventions for ensuring the health and well-being of both mothers and children.

To mark the occasion, the hospital has planned a week-long series of awareness programmes, educational sessions, counselling activities and community outreach initiatives aimed at empowering pregnant women and new mothers with accurate information and practical support. The programmes are designed to promote optimal breastfeeding practices while addressing common myths and misconceptions that often discourage mothers from breastfeeding.

One of the key attractions of the inaugural programme was a series of engaging role plays and myth-buster sessions presented by TMH healthcare teams. The performances challenged long-standing misconceptions surrounding breastfeeding, particularly the harmful practice of discarding colostrum—the thick, yellowish first milk produced after childbirth.

Widely regarded as a baby’s “first vaccine,” colostrum is rich in antibodies, essential nutrients and immune-boosting factors that help protect newborns from infections and support healthy growth from the very beginning of life. Through these interactive sessions, mothers and their families were encouraged to recognise its importance and ensure that every newborn receives this vital first nourishment.

Hospital experts emphasised that breastfeeding is much more than a source of nutrition. It provides all the essential nutrients an infant needs during the first six months of life, strengthens immunity, supports healthy physical and brain development, and fosters a strong emotional bond between mother and child. Breastfeeding also offers significant health benefits for mothers, contributing to their overall well-being.

TMH highlighted that successful breastfeeding is a shared responsibility. While mothers play the central role, support from families, healthcare professionals, employers and the wider community is essential in creating an environment where women can breastfeed confidently and overcome challenges they may face.

The hospital also underscored the role of its specially trained nursing staff, who provide comprehensive breastfeeding support during both the antenatal and postnatal periods. They guide mothers on proper breastfeeding techniques, positioning and attachment, lactation management, and offer personalised counselling to address concerns, dispel misconceptions and help overcome breastfeeding difficulties.

On the occasion of World Breastfeeding Week, Tata Main Hospital appealed to healthcare workers, families and community members to work together in creating a breastfeeding-friendly culture by strengthening proven practices, challenging myths and supporting every mother in her breastfeeding journey.

“Every mother deserves support. Every baby deserves the gift of breast milk. Together, we can build a healthier future, one child at a time,” the hospital said.
