Jharkhand News : After dedicating more than four decades to teaching science, Umesh Kumar was preparing to retire on July 31. His school had planned a farewell ceremony, and students were eager to bid an emotional goodbye to their beloved teacher. However, a departmental action taken just a day before his retirement overshadowed the occasion and sparked widespread discussion.
Show-Cause Notice Issued Before Retirement
On July 30, Block Education Extension Officer (BEEO) Rakesh Kumar issued a show-cause notice to Umesh Kumar. The notice sought an explanation for allegedly leaving the school without prior permission for a few hours on seven occasions between June 24 and July 27, 2026.
The notice also directed that his salary payment be withheld. According to reports, the teacher was deeply distressed after receiving the notice, and his health reportedly deteriorated.
Respected Science Teacher
Umesh Kumar has been serving at the Upgraded Plus Two High School, Digwar, since 2018 and is widely regarded as a dedicated and efficient science teacher.
His colleagues questioned the timing of the departmental action, arguing that if any official procedure was necessary, it could have been initiated well before his retirement instead of at the last moment.
Teacher Declines Detailed Comment
Speaking briefly on the matter, Umesh Kumar said that he had been asked to submit an explanation as per the directions of senior authorities. He added that he was not in good health and therefore did not wish to comment further.
School Gives Emotional Farewell
School Principal Dinesh Sahu described Umesh Kumar as a committed and outstanding teacher. He said the school organized a respectful farewell ceremony on July 31, where both teachers and students became emotional while bidding him farewell.
BEEO Calls It a Routine Departmental Procedure
BEEO Rakesh Kumar said that the notice was issued only to seek an explanation regarding the teacher’s early departure from school on certain occasions. He maintained that it was part of a routine departmental process and denied any personal bias or ill intent.
Rakesh Kumar is currently overseeing educational administration in 16 blocks, including Daru, Sadar, Katkamsandi, Katkamdag, Barhi, Chalkusha, and Padma.
Timing of Action Sparks Debate
The incident has triggered debate within the education community, with many questioning whether disciplinary proceedings—when necessary—should be handled in a manner that does not overshadow the dignity and recognition of an employee’s decades of dedicated public service.
