India News : Sanjay Roy, the civic volunteer convicted in the shocking 2024 gangrape and murder case at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, continues to create disturbances inside prison. Sentenced to life imprisonment by a lower court last year, Roy has been serving his term at Presidency Central Correctional Home in South Kolkata for the past seven months.
According to jail sources, Roy has shown no remorse for his crimes. Initially assigned to gardening duties within the prison, he began complying with basic prison regulations. However, over time, his behavior became increasingly aggressive. He now regularly misbehaves with fellow inmates and prison staff, blatantly violating orders issued by jail authorities.
Reports suggest that disciplinary action under the prison manual is likely to be taken against Roy. Officials are considering suspending his right to spend the daily wages earned during prison labor—though the amount will continue accumulating in his account, he may be barred from using it.
Efforts to reach ADG & IG of Correctional Services, L. N. Meena, were unsuccessful. Meanwhile, Roy’s lawyer, Kaushik Gupta, stated that he is unaware of the jail misconduct allegations and is only representing Roy in his appeal to the High Court seeking acquittal.
Commenting on Roy’s behavior, psychologist and graphologist Dr. Rajnita Saha Mukhopadhyay explained that his defiance may stem from a mental state of denial and the refusal to accept guilt. This behavior, she said, reflects deep frustration, suppressed anger, and a subconscious rejection of the court’s verdict. It also indicates signs of antisocial tendencies and psychological conflict.
On the other hand, the victim’s family has announced a protest march to the state secretariat—“Nabanna Abhiyan”—on August 9, marking the first anniversary of the incident. They are demanding continued justice and full investigation into the broader conspiracy they believe still remains unexposed.
It was on the morning of August 9, 2024, that the victim’s body was discovered in a seminar hall of the hospital. Although Roy has been sentenced, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has yet to complete its probe into what is believed to be a larger conspiracy behind the crime.
