India News : In a major step to curb arbitrary fee hikes by private schools, the Delhi government has passed a new law mandating full financial transparency before any increase in school fees. Approved by Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena, the legislation aims to ensure accountability in fee fixation and protect parents from unjustified financial burden.
Under the new provisions, private schools will now be required to present complete accounts and detailed justification before proposing any fee hike. The move is intended to put a check on years of unchecked increases, particularly under non-tuition heads such as development fees, annual charges and maintenance costs, which were often imposed without proper disclosure or consultation.
Over the past decade, several private schools in Delhi raised fees repeatedly without valid reasons, creating distress among parents and inviting complaints to the Directorate of Education and the government. Parents’ associations and civil society groups have long demanded a strong, transparent regulatory framework to stop such practices.
The government believes this law will make education more affordable, bring clarity to school finances, and ensure that fee increases, if any, are fair and justified. Officials say the reform will strengthen trust between schools and parents while enforcing discipline in the private education sector.
