Intimidation of Election Duty Staff Will Not Be Tolerated: EC

India News : Amid preparations for the upcoming elections in West Bengal, the Election Commission of India has issued a strong warning, stating that any attempt to intimidate officials engaged in election duty will not be tolerated under any circumstances. The Commission made it clear that the safety and dignity of Booth Level Officers (BLOs), EROs, AEROs, and observers are of paramount importance.

The statement comes a day after a delegation of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) met the Election Commission on Wednesday. Following the meeting, party general secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee raised several questions regarding the Commission’s functioning. Responding firmly, the Commission warned that anyone attempting to take the law into their own hands would face strict legal action.

The Election Commission also clearly instructed the TMC delegation that the West Bengal government must immediately release the enhanced honorarium for all BLOs, which has already been approved by the Commission. It emphasized that several new measures are being implemented to ensure the smooth conduct of the electoral process.

According to the Commission, BLOs are the backbone of the election machinery, and neglecting their rights, safety, or facilities can adversely affect the fairness and credibility of elections. To further improve voter convenience, the Commission informed the delegation that polling booths will also be set up in high-rise residential buildings, gated communities, and slum areas to ensure that no voter faces difficulty in casting their vote and that voter turnout improves.

The Commission categorically told the TMC to ensure that its grassroots-level leaders and workers are not involved in threatening or pressuring election duty staff. It reiterated that intimidating any election official, whether a BLO or an observer, is a serious offence.

The Election Commission made it clear that threats or coercion by political party workers will not be tolerated and that strict action will be taken against those found guilty. Reaffirming its commitment, the Commission stated that it remains fully dedicated to conducting free, fair, and peaceful elections across the country.
