More News : The year 2026 has begun and it holds special significance for astronomy enthusiasts. A total of four eclipses will occur this year, including two solar eclipses and two lunar eclipses. However, all four will not be visible from India. Only one total lunar eclipse will be visible in India, while the remaining three will either not be visible at all or will have no noticeable impact in the country.
🔹 First Eclipse: February 17, 2026 (Solar Eclipse)
The first eclipse of the year will occur on February 17, 2026. This will be an annular solar eclipse, often referred to as the “Ring of Fire” eclipse. During this event, about 96 percent of the Sun will be covered, and the eclipse will last for approximately 2 minutes and 20 seconds.
This solar eclipse will be visible in southern Africa, southern Argentina, and Antarctica. It will not be visible in India, and therefore, no Sutak period will be observed in the country.
🔹 Second Eclipse: March 3, 2026 (Total Lunar Eclipse)
The most important eclipse for India will take place on March 3, 2026. This will be a total lunar eclipse, fully visible across India. The eclipse will last for about 58 minutes, during which the Moon will appear reddish, a phenomenon commonly known as the Blood Moon.
According to astronomers, this will be the last total lunar eclipse before 2029. Since it will be clearly visible in India, the Sutak period will be applicable, giving it religious and traditional significance as well.
🔹 Third Eclipse: July 29, 2026 (Solar Eclipse)
The third eclipse of the year will occur on July 29, 2026. This will also be a solar eclipse, but it will not be visible in India. It can be seen in parts of Africa, South America, and Antarctica. As it will not be visible in India, Sutak will not be observed.
🔹 Fourth Eclipse: August 28, 2026 (Lunar Eclipse)
The final eclipse of 2026 will take place on August 28, 2026. This will be the second lunar eclipse of the year, visible in North and South America, Europe, and parts of Africa. Unfortunately, it will not be visible in India, and hence, no Sutak period will apply.
