India News : The parents of a junior doctor who was brutally raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College & Hospital have voiced serious concerns over the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) handling of the case. According to sources close to the family, a petition has been filed in the lower court expressing doubts about the transparency and fairness of the ongoing probe.

The family’s legal counsel argued in court that the CBI’s Additional Director Sampat Meena, who is supervising the investigation, and senior West Bengal police officer Vineet Kumar Goyal, are both 1994-batch IPS officers. Since they underwent training together and have known each other for years, the family fears that personal ties may compromise the integrity of the investigation.
It is important to note that when this horrifying crime occurred on August 9, 2024, Vineet Goyal was serving as Kolkata Police Commissioner. He was also in charge of the initial investigation, which was conducted by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) under his leadership. After public outrage over the handling of the case, Goyal was removed from his post and the Calcutta High Court transferred the investigation to the CBI.
In its response, the CBI stated that being part of the same IPS batch is not grounds to question an officer’s impartiality. The agency’s counsel emphasized that no evidence has been found indicating Vineet Goyal’s involvement in any wrongdoing or conspiracy, which is why no action has been taken against him.
Previously, a local court had convicted civilian volunteer Sanjay Roy for the rape and murder, sentencing him to life imprisonment. However, the CBI is now investigating whether a larger conspiracy was at play—particularly regarding the potential tampering and manipulation of evidence during the initial police inquiry.
The victim’s parents strongly believe that unless the CBI conducts a fearless and thorough investigation, justice will remain elusive. Their court petition raises serious concerns over the agency’s conduct and the broader implications for accountability in high-profile crimes.
With public pressure mounting and the judiciary now involved in overseeing the matter, the focus is firmly on whether the CBI can rise to the occasion and deliver justice in a case that has shocked the conscience of the nation.
