West Bengal Assembly Elections Announced in Two Phases
India News : The election schedule for the West Bengal Assembly Elections has been officially announced, triggering fresh political debate across the state. This time, voting will take place in just two phases, making electoral strategy more crucial than ever.
Close Contest Expected in Phase 1
The first phase of polling will be held on April 23 across 152 seats. Based on data from the West Bengal Assembly Election 2021:
-
All India Trinamool Congress had an edge in around 92 seats (~60.5%)
-
Bharatiya Janata Party won about 59 seats (~38.8%)
-
1 seat went to other parties
This phase is expected to witness a tight contest, especially in northern, western, and central regions where both parties have a significant presence.
Phase 2 Favors TMC Strongly
The second phase will take place on April 29, covering 142 seats. The political picture here is quite different:
-
TMC dominated around 123 seats (~86.6%)
-
BJP managed only 18 seats
-
1 seat went to others
This region is widely considered a stronghold of the ruling party.
Strong Base of Mamata Banerjee
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee continues to enjoy strong support in these areas. Welfare schemes, along with backing from women, minorities, and beneficiary groups, have helped consolidate TMC’s voter base.
BJP Faces Key Challenges
Political analysts believe the BJP’s biggest challenge in Phase 2 will be breaking into TMC’s traditional vote bank. Expanding its influence among rural voters and welfare beneficiaries remains a difficult task.
A State Divided into Two Electoral Battlegrounds
The two-phase election has effectively split the state into two distinct political battlegrounds:
-
Phase 1: Competitive and closely fought
-
Phase 2: Clear advantage for TMC
Both major parties are expected to tailor their campaign strategies accordingly in the coming weeks.
