Bihar News : CNG consumption in the capital has increased nearly 19-fold in six years, with current daily demand reaching around 1.40 lakh kg. The CNG network in Patna and surrounding areas is also expanding steadily to meet the rising demand.
GAIL India started CNG supply in Patna around seven years ago with three stations. By February 2025, the number had increased to 30 stations in Patna and nearby areas, while the total has now reached 41.
Annual CNG Supply Rises 19 Times
According to GAIL General Manager A.K. Sinha, CNG supply stood at 19 lakh kg in 2019-20.
It increased to 47 lakh kg in 2020-21, 1.27 crore kg in 2021-22, 2.52 crore kg in 2022-23 and 3.14 crore kg in 2023-24.
The annual supply was estimated to reach 3.60 crore kg in 2024-25. Overall, CNG supply has increased nearly 19 times over six years.
Daily Consumption Reaches 1.40 Lakh Kg
Patna currently consumes around 1.40 lakh kg of CNG every day. Daily consumption was around 90,000 kg in 2025 and approximately 70,000 kg in 2024.
With demand continuing to rise, new CNG stations are being added in the city and surrounding areas, while the supply infrastructure is also being strengthened.
However, long queues have been reported at several CNG stations in urban areas. Areas such as Bihta have also faced supply-related problems. According to consumers, some pumps display notices indicating that CNG is unavailable for hours, forcing vehicle owners to visit other stations.
Naubatpur and Gardanibagh Strengthen Supply Network
The Naubatpur mother station has long been a key base for CNG and PNG supply in Patna and surrounding areas. A mother CNG station has also been developed in Gardanibagh.
The Gardanibagh facility is expected to make CNG supply easier in Gardanibagh, Chitkohra, Anisabad, Beur and nearby areas.
More Than 60,000 CNG Vehicles in Patna
More than 60,000 CNG vehicles are operating in the capital every day. These include over 40,000 autorickshaws and around 20,000 private cars, along with buses and other vehicles.
Demand for CNG has increased among autorickshaws, taxis and private vehicles because of its relatively lower cost compared with petrol and diesel and the need to reduce pollution.
In May 2025, supply disruptions led to long queues at several CNG stations in Patna, highlighting the city’s growing dependence on CNG.
