Jordanian Strike in Syria Leaves at Least Nine Dead

Amman (Jordan): The country’s armed forces stated that they targeted positions held by armed groups in southeastern Syria in response to a shooting attack that took place on Friday at a church in Jordan’s Karak Governorate. That shooting resulted in at least nine deaths and left dozens of others injured. The Jordanian military stated that these strikes in Syria were carried out “in coordination with the Syrian government.”

According to a report by Al Jazeera, the military claimed that several members of terrorist groups were killed or wounded in the strikes, and a number of their vehicles were destroyed. However, Syria has denied any such coordination with Jordan. In a statement, the Syrian government asserted that “this military operation was conducted without any prior coordination or notification,” and added that it has launched an investigation into the matter.

Syria’s Civil Defense Service reported that attacks occurred on Monday evening at at least four locations across the rural areas of Daraa and As-Suwayda governorates. Their teams recovered the bodies of seven individuals—three men, one woman, and three children.

According to the Civil Defense Service, five of the victims belonged to the same family; they were killed when a tent was struck in the village of Al-Tayy, in Daraa Governorate. Three other members of the same family, including a child, sustained injuries. A second attack took place in the Al-Shayyah area of Daraa, resulting in the death of an 80-year-old man. A third attack targeted a residential building in Muzayrib, in the Ain al-Basal area of Daraa, though no casualties were reported there.
