- Accident in Chandni Chowk, Delhi, fear of people getting buried under the debris; NDRF and fire brigade teams engaged in relief and rescue operations.
New Delhi : A major accident took place on Thursday in Chawri Bazaar, Chandni Chowk, Delhi. A part of a three-storey building under construction suddenly collapsed near Chawri Bazaar metro station in Sheesh Mahal area of Gali Sattara. There was chaos in the area after the accident. Delhi Police has confirmed the death of two people, while many others are feared buried under the debris.
As soon as information about the incident was received, Delhi Fire Department teams reached the spot. Six fire tenders were dispatched for relief and rescue operations. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team also reached the spot and started the rescue operation. Continuous efforts are being made to safely rescue the people trapped under the debris.
Regarding the accident, Aam Aadmi Party leader Saurabh Bhardwaj posted on social media platform X and raised questions on the functioning of Delhi Government and Municipal Corporation (MCD). He alleged that despite security checks of buildings in Chandni Chowk and Chawri Bazaar, such incidents are coming to light. Bhardwaj targeted the government of Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and the MCD, claiming that orders are issued in the name of building safety audits, but effective action is not taken at the ground level. He also made allegations of corruption and bribery in the concerned departments.
The AAP leader alleged that along with Delhi Police and MCD, now the Fire Department and Revenue Department officials are also facing complaints of recovery from building owners. He claimed that the buildings of those who refuse to pay bribes are sealed. Giving the example of two gyms being sealed in Greater Kailash-2 market, Saurabh Bhardwaj raised the question that if the aim is to follow the rules, then why action is not taken against other business establishments. At present the rescue operation is going on in Chavadi Bazaar. The actual reasons for the building collapse and the status of construction safety standards will become clear only after investigation.
