India News : Three individuals were caught red-handed attempting to smuggle cannabis hidden inside wooden frames containing images of Hindu deities. Approximately 12 kilograms of cannabis were recovered from their possession. Among the arrested is a Trinamool Congress leader, Lalan Sheikh, who is also a member of the Narayanpur Panchayat. Another accused is a resident of Tetulbandhi village under Narayanpur Panchayat, while the third is a resident of Assam.

On Sunday, the police said that the trio had arrived at the Rampurhat bus stand from Baharampur on Saturday. They were waiting at the Margram crossing in Rampurhat, allegedly planning to travel elsewhere, when police, acting on a tip-off, detained them. During a search, large quantities of cannabis were found hidden inside the frames of religious pictures stored in their bags. The three were arrested and taken to Rampurhat police station.
The police suspect that the accused were exploiting the nearby Tarapith market, which is known for selling images of deities, as a cover for smuggling cannabis, believing that no one would suspect such items. Authorities also believe that a regular smuggling route may have been established between Baharampur and Birbhum district for trafficking cannabis.
Commenting on the incident, Trinamool Congress’s local block president Amatullah (Milon) said, “We have informed the Rampurhat MLA about the matter. The party has demanded suspension of Lalan Sheikh. The final decision will be taken by the senior leadership.”
