Researchers at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru have identified an enzyme from microorganisms found in a cow’s stomach that can break down the protective layer surrounding dangerous bacteria.
The discovery could potentially open new avenues for treating serious infections in the future.
Enzyme found capable of breaking bacterial biofilms
According to the research, many bacteria form a strong protective layer known as a biofilm around themselves. This layer helps them survive antibiotic treatment, making serious infections, particularly those acquired in hospitals, difficult to treat.
Scientists found that the enzyme obtained from microorganisms in a cow’s stomach is capable of breaking down this biofilm.
Effective against dangerous bacteria
The enzyme was found to be particularly effective against dangerous bacteria such as Acinetobacter baumannii and Klebsiella pneumoniae.
Both bacteria are associated with serious hospital-acquired infections and are known to show resistance to multiple antibiotics, making treatment challenging.
Research is still at an early stage
Experts said the research is still in its early stages, and extensive testing will be required before the enzyme can be developed for use as a treatment.
If future studies and trials are successful, the discovery could play an important role in addressing the global challenge of antibiotic resistance and may lead to new approaches for treating drug-resistant bacterial infections.
