India News : The tradition of offering hair at major South Indian temples—especially at famous shrines like Tirupati Balaji—remains deeply rooted in faith. Men, women and even children often undergo tonsuring or donate hair after their wishes are fulfilled. For devotees, it is an emotional and spiritual act, widely believed to symbolise surrender of ego and devotion to the divine.
However, once offered at temples, the hair does not remain merely a religious offering. It becomes the starting point of a major global business, driven by strong international demand. Temple-collected hair is systematically gathered, thoroughly washed, sorted and processed. Based on quality, it is categorised into different grades.
Industry sources say the highest-quality hair is primarily used to make wigs and hair extensions, products that are in high demand worldwide. Hair sourced from Indian temples is exported to more than 55 countries, including markets in the US, Europe, Africa and across Asia. The overall trade is estimated to be worth billions of rupees, reflecting the scale and value of this niche industry.
A key reason for the premium pricing is that temple hair is considered “virgin hair”—meaning it typically has no chemical treatment, colouring or processing prior to donation. This makes it highly desirable in the global beauty industry, where it is often seen as one of the most reliable and high-quality raw materials for hair products.
The revenue generated from the sale of donated hair is received by temple trusts. This income is used not only for temple maintenance and development but also for a range of welfare initiatives such as food distribution, education support, hospitals, and aid for the underprivileged. In this way, a devotee’s offering becomes part of an economic cycle that supports broader social work.
Ultimately, hair donated as a vow is more than a symbol of faith—it has become an unusual link between devotion and economy, shaping livelihoods and funding community welfare through a global supply chain.
