World News : Russia’s biggest assault on Ukraine since the war began has rattled Washington, with US President Donald Trump hinting at imposing fresh sanctions on Moscow. Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Trump said he would take a “major decision” but did not disclose details.
According to the Kyiv Post, US Treasury Secretary Scott Besent said the conflict had become a contest between Ukraine’s military endurance and Russia’s economic survival. He added that Washington was prepared to partner with European allies to target countries purchasing Russian oil, potentially crippling Moscow’s economy.
US Vice President JD Vance also discussed joint measures with European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen, signaling closer transatlantic coordination.
The US Embassy in Kyiv condemned the strikes, calling them “pointless killings and unprecedented destruction.” Keith Kellogg, Trump’s special envoy to Ukraine, warned that Russia was escalating the war after a massive drone attack on Kyiv’s Cabinet building.
On Capitol Hill, lawmakers from both parties called for immediate action. Republican senators Thom Tillis and John Cornyn urged Trump to confront Vladimir Putin, while Democratic Senator Jeanne Shaheen demanded swift sanctions, warning that “Putin won’t stop until forced.”
Ukraine’s Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko said the Cabinet building was directly hit, though no officials were injured. At least four people were killed and over 44 injured in overnight strikes, which also damaged residential towers in Kyiv. She urged allies to supply more air defense systems before winter, saying, “Russia does not want peace. Now is the time for action.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned the war will drag on further, while UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the “brutal” strikes, stressing that Putin is not serious about peace.
