IGIMS Patna Gets Major Upgrade: New Modular OTs, ICU, Dialysis Centre and Advanced Medical Equipment

Bihar News : There is encouraging news for patients across Bihar as the Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS), Patna has added several new medical facilities and advanced equipment. The upgrades are expected to strengthen treatment for patients with serious and complex medical conditions.

According to hospital officials, five major new facilities have been introduced, including advanced operation theatres, a critical care unit, a new dialysis centre and modern medical equipment.

Six New Modular Operation Theatres

The hospital’s Regional Institute of Ophthalmology (RIO) has added six new modular operation theatres at an estimated cost of around ₹10.25 crore. The project was funded jointly by the Central and Bihar governments.

According to Dr. Vibhuti Prasann Sinha, Head of the Eye Department, the theatres have been designed for specialised eye surgeries:

  • Two theatres for Vitreo-Retina procedures
  • Two theatres for Cornea and Cataract surgeries
  • Two theatres for Glaucoma and Oculoplasty procedures

The new OTs are equipped with advanced surgical microscopes costing around ₹1 crore each, aimed at improving precision and maintaining a highly controlled surgical environment.

20-Bed Closed ICU Added

For critically ill patients, the Department of Critical Care Medicine (CCM) has started a new 20-bed closed Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

The unit will provide specialised care under a dedicated team of critical-care experts, allowing seriously ill patients to receive comprehensive treatment within the hospital.

Advanced Life-Support Technology for Severe Respiratory Cases

The hospital has also introduced advanced respiratory support technologies, including prone ventilation and High-Frequency Oscillatory Ventilation (HFOV), for patients suffering from severe respiratory failure.

Doctors and medical staff are also being trained to operate the advanced equipment.

New 16-Bed Dialysis Centre

A new 16-bed dialysis centre has been established under the Department of Nephrology. The facility and equipment were developed at an estimated cost of around ₹8 crore with support from the Central and Bihar governments.

The additional beds and machines are expected to help the hospital handle the growing demand for dialysis and reduce waiting times for patients, particularly those who require regular treatment.

Herbal Garden Developed on Campus

Alongside medical infrastructure, IGIMS has also developed a herbal garden within the hospital campus.

The initiative is intended to create a more pleasant and positive environment for patients and visitors while also helping people learn about medicinal plants and their traditional uses.

With the addition of specialised operation theatres, critical-care infrastructure, advanced respiratory support, expanded dialysis facilities and other upgrades, IGIMS Patna is aiming to strengthen its capacity to provide specialised treatment to patients from Bihar and neighbouring regions.
