Ranchi: Jharkhand has recorded a decline of ₹265.75 crore in electricity duty collection compared with the corresponding period of the previous financial year. The state collected ₹546.94 crore in electricity duty up to August during the 2025–26 financial year, while collection stood at just ₹281.19 crore up to August 2026 in the current financial year.
The figures indicate a significant drop in revenue from electricity duty. The amount collected during the current period is nearly half of the collection recorded during the corresponding period last year.
How Electricity Duty Is Collected in Jharkhand
The state government levies electricity duty on power consumption. Under the applicable state rules, electricity duty is charged at 6 per cent of the energy charge.
The Jharkhand Bijli Vitran Nigam Limited (JBVNL) collects electricity duty from consumers based on their electricity consumption.
Jharkhand also has a scheme providing 200 units of free electricity to eligible domestic consumers. According to the information provided, electricity duty is collected from domestic consumers whose monthly consumption exceeds 200 units.
Industries and Power Producers Also Pay Duty
Apart from domestic consumers, electricity duty is also paid by industrial units and establishments operating captive power plants on electricity generated and consumed by them.
Industrial units purchasing electricity from Jharkhand Bijli Vitran Nigam Limited and Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) are also liable to pay electricity duty under the applicable rules.
The collection figures include contributions from power distribution and supply agencies, as well as industrial and commercial establishments.

Major Changes Across Organisations
The figures show substantial differences in electricity duty collection across the listed organisations.
JBVNL’s collection increased from ₹100 crore to ₹130.64 crore. Rungta Mines Limited also recorded an increase, from ₹32.99 crore to ₹48.76 crore.
In contrast, collections from DVC’s Chirkunda unit fell from ₹190.54 crore to ₹28.77 crore. Tata Steel’s collection declined from ₹156.32 crore to ₹30.37 crore, while JUSCO’s collection fell from ₹21.75 crore to ₹3.37 crore.
