Kolkata Gangrape FIR Omits Accused’s Full Names, Sparks Controversy

Kolkata : Allegations of deliberate negligence have surfaced against Kolkata Police in the gangrape case of a female law student at a college in Kasba. Despite the arrest of three accused individuals reportedly affiliated with the Trinamool Congress’s student wing, TMCP, the First Information Report (FIR) filed by the police mentions only the initials — “M”, “J”, and “P” — instead of their full names.

The three accused have been identified as Manojeet Mishra, Zaid Ahmed, and Pramit Mukhopadhyay. All of them are either current or former students of South Kolkata Law College and have confirmed links with the TMCP. Despite this, the FIR does not record their full names, raising suspicions that police may have intentionally withheld key details to shield political affiliations.

Senior advocate of the Calcutta High Court, Firdaus Sameem, criticized the omission, stating, “If the victim named the accused clearly, then not mentioning their full names in the FIR is highly inappropriate. When the accused are known to the victim and easily identifiable, leaving out their names suggests deliberate concealment.”

The issue has triggered political uproar. CPI(M) leader Shatarup Ghosh called it a calculated move by the police and demanded that the FIR be corrected to include the full names and other relevant details of the accused. BJP councillor Sajal Ghosh echoed this sentiment, accusing the police of shielding those with political connections by using only initials in official documents.

Adding to the controversy, a delegation from the National Commission for Women, led by member Archana Majumdar, visited the college campus on Sunday. The team also questioned the conduct of the police and the manner in which the investigation has been handled.

Critics have drawn parallels between the police handling of this case and their earlier controversial response to the RG Kar Hospital case, highlighting what they describe as a pattern of indifference and politically motivated inaction. This latest instance has raised serious questions about the impartiality and accountability of Kolkata Police in handling sensitive cases involving individuals with political backing.
