Motion Photo on WhatsApp to Capture Moments with Sound

Offbeat News : WhatsApp, one of the world’s most widely used messaging platforms, is currently testing a brand-new feature called “Motion Photo”, aimed at making photos more dynamic and immersive. According to WABetaInfo, the feature was spotted in the WhatsApp Beta version 2.25.22.29 and is currently available to select beta testers. The global rollout for all users is expected in the coming months.

The Motion Photo feature works by capturing a few moments before and after the actual photo is taken. Unlike standard images, Motion Photos include not only visual movement but also audio, making them feel more alive. When a user sends a Motion Photo, the receiver will be able to both see the moment and hear its sound.

When selecting an image from the gallery, users will notice a new icon on the screen—a play button surrounded by a ring and a small circle. Tapping this icon will allow them to send the image as a Motion Photo. This functionality is similar to existing features in several Android smartphones; for example, Samsung calls it “Motion Photos” and Google Pixel brands it as “Top Shot.”

However, to use Motion Photo on WhatsApp, your device must support motion photo capture. Even if your phone doesn’t have the capability to record such photos, you will still be able to view and listen to Motion Photos sent by others.

The introduction of this feature will be particularly exciting for users who love to capture and share moments in a more realistic way—combining visuals and audio to better convey the atmosphere of an event.

In addition to Motion Photo, WhatsApp is reportedly working on another significant privacy-focused update. Soon, users will have the option to share a username instead of their phone number, providing a safer way to connect without revealing personal contact details. This username feature will appear as an icon in the top right corner of the chat screen, making it quick and easy to access.

The combination of these two updates—the creative Motion Photo tool and the privacy-friendly username sharing—signals WhatsApp’s commitment to enhancing both the personal expression and security of its platform. For photography enthusiasts, the Motion Photo feature could change the way moments are shared, adding a layer of authenticity that static images simply cannot match.

As testing continues, the rollout of Motion Photo will likely generate buzz among WhatsApp’s global user base, blending creativity with convenience in everyday communication.
