Online Gaming Ban Triggers Massive Job Losses, Industry in Crisis

India News : The central government’s recent decision to ban real-money online gaming has dealt a severe blow to India’s gaming industry, leaving lakhs of employees jobless and the sector’s future uncertain. Major companies such as Dream11, MPL, Zupee, Paytm First Games, Games24x7, Junglee Games, and Adda52 have been forced to shut down operations abruptly, leading to mass layoffs across the sector.

Employees working in Delhi-NCR offices reported that they were suddenly informed there was no work left and were asked to start looking for new opportunities. Those affected include professionals from game development, platform management, customer support, marketing, and data analytics. Many of them now face additional stress with ongoing home loans, car EMIs, children’s education, and elderly family responsibilities.

Before the ban, India’s real-money gaming sector was valued at over ₹30,000 crore, directly employing more than 200,000 people. With outsourced staff included, the workforce touched nearly 300,000. The sector also contributed significantly to advertising, content creation, and tax revenues for the government — all of which have now come to a sudden halt.

The government defended its decision, citing social concerns. IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that nearly 45 crore people had been negatively impacted by online money games, with losses exceeding ₹20,000 crore. He added that the addiction had ruined families and even led to suicides in several cases.

Industry leaders, however, argue that the abrupt ban, without a proper transition plan or regulatory framework, has undone years of hard work and growth. Experts believe that instead of an outright ban, clear regulations could have safeguarded both consumers and employment opportunities in the sector.
