PM Modi and Xi Jinping Hold Bilateral Talks: Agreement on Border Peace, Cooperation, and Trade

India News : Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping held a significant bilateral meeting ahead of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Tianjin, China. The two leaders discussed key issues including border stability, bilateral trade, mutual trust, and sensitivity towards each other’s core concerns.

After the meeting, PM Modi stated, “We are committed to advancing our relationship based on mutual trust, respect, and sensitivity.” He also congratulated President Xi on China’s successful SCO chairmanship and expressed gratitude for the warm welcome and the invitation to visit.

The leaders emphasized the importance of maintaining peace along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), following recent troop disengagements. PM Modi highlighted that a new agreement between the special representatives of both nations on border management has been reached. Notably, the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra has resumed, along with direct flight services between India and China.

In a warm acknowledgment of their last interaction during the 2024 BRICS Summit in Kazan, PM Modi said, “Our discussions then provided a positive direction to our relations. Now, with a stable border environment, we can move forward.”

This marks the first formal bilateral meeting between the two leaders in ten months and is seen as a crucial step toward normalizing India-China relations, especially amid broader geopolitical tensions and trade policies, including U.S. tariff actions.

The meeting gains added importance as it could pave the way for deeper cooperation between the two Asian giants, whose combined population exceeds 2.8 billion. The discussion also underlines the strategic opportunity for both nations to assert influence beyond Western-led global frameworks.

The recent agreement on LAC patrolling protocols has helped reduce a four-year-long standoff. Observers see this SCO summit and bilateral talks as an important signal that India and China are ready to work together despite past tensions — a message aimed at countering Western efforts to isolate China, Russia, Iran, and now India.
