Rumours of ₹500 Note Demonetisation Fake, PIB Issues Clarification

India News : Rumours of demonetisation of ₹500 currency notes are once again doing the rounds on social media, creating confusion and panic among the public. Several viral posts on Facebook and X (formerly Twitter) have claimed that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is planning to withdraw ₹500 notes from circulation. Some posts even alleged that ATMs will stop dispensing ₹500 notes after March 2026, after which the denomination would be declared invalid.

Following growing public concern, the government stepped in to clarify the situation.

🔹 PIB Fact Check: Claims Are Completely False

The government’s official fact-checking agency, Press Information Bureau (PIB), has conducted a detailed fact check and declared all such claims fake and misleading.

PIB clearly stated that:

  • Neither the Government of India

  • Nor the Reserve Bank of India (RBI)

has taken any decision to discontinue or demonetise ₹500 notes.

According to PIB, ₹500 notes remain completely legal tender, and there is no plan to ban or withdraw them in the future.

🔹 Note Recycling Misinterpreted as Demonetisation

PIB further explained that banks regularly remove old, damaged, or torn notes from circulation and replace them with new ones under a routine process known as note recycling. This is a normal banking procedure and does not mean that any denomination is being phased out.

This routine process was misrepresented on social media, giving rise to unnecessary rumours and fear.

🔹 Public Advised to Avoid Fake News

PIB has urged citizens to avoid believing or sharing unverified information on social media and to rely only on official government or RBI communications for accurate updates related to currency and banking.
