India News : Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, has raised serious concerns about the misuse of Form 6, a crucial document used for enrolling new voters in India. He claims that electoral rules are being violated during the registration process, potentially threatening the democratic process.
But what exactly is Form 6?
Form 6 is an official document issued by the Election Commission of India (ECI), used by Indian citizens aged 18 and above to apply for a Voter ID card and get their names added to the electoral roll. It’s also used when a voter moves to a different constituency and wants to update their voter registration accordingly.
️ How the Voter Registration Process Works:
To become a voter, applicants can fill Form 6 online via the Voter Services Portal. After signing up, they must provide personal details like name, date of birth, gender, address, and optionally, their Aadhaar number. A passport-size photo must be uploaded, and a declaration needs to be submitted.
Once submitted, the details are verified by local officials like the Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) or Booth Level Officer (BLO). If everything is in order, the applicant’s name is added to the voter list, and the Voter ID is sent via post.
Purpose and Importance of Form 6:
Form 6 is vital to ensure that eligible citizens can participate in elections. It also helps maintain an updated and accurate electoral roll. It supports both new registrations and address updates for voters who have moved to another constituency.
The Election Commission uses digital tools and Aadhaar verification (optional) to maintain transparency and reduce fraud.
However, Rahul Gandhi has alleged that Form 6 is being misused in certain regions to manipulate voter rolls. He warned that this could undermine the electoral process. The Election Commission recently released the draft electoral roll in Bihar, assuring that no voter would be removed without reason and that 91.32% of forms have been digitized.
Still, Gandhi’s claims could spark renewed political debate over the fairness of voter registration practices in India.
