India News : Potholes on Indian roads have turned into a silent killer. Official data shows that 9,438 people lost their lives after falling into potholes over the last five years across the country. The figures reveal alarming negligence, with Uttar Pradesh topping the list, accounting for more than half of the total deaths.
Uttar Pradesh worst affected, Madhya Pradesh next
In the five-year period, Uttar Pradesh recorded 5,127 deaths due to pothole-related incidents—the highest in the country. Madhya Pradesh stands second with 969 deaths. Other states with high numbers include:

Deaths up by 53% in five years
According to data presented in the Lok Sabha by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, fatalities caused by potholes have increased by 53% between 2020 and 2024.

Zero deaths reported in several states
The data also highlights some surprising facts. Bihar, Goa, Chandigarh, and Andhra Pradesh reported zero deaths due to potholes during this period. Among northeastern states, Manipur, Nagaland, and Tripura also reported no such fatalities.
Despite recent public outrage over a pothole-related death, Delhi recorded only 50 such cases in the last five years, according to official records.
Lower than 2017, but concern remains
The ministry noted that the number of deaths is lower compared to 2017, when 3,597 people died in a single year due to pothole-related incidents. However, officials and experts agree that the current numbers remain deeply concerning.

Road safety experts stress that without timely repairs, strict accountability, and better monitoring, potholes will continue to pose a serious threat to lives. The data underscores the urgent need for stronger enforcement and maintenance standards across states.
