The Karnataka state government had earlier suspended Bengaluru City Police Commissioner B. Dayanand, Deputy Commissioner of Police Vikas Kumar, and another officer Shekhar for alleged negligence in managing the crowd. A detailed report of the incident and the suspension order was submitted to the Centre via the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms (DPAR). After reviewing the findings and recommendations, the Central Government officially approved the suspension of the three officials.

The stampede occurred when thousands of excited RCB fans gathered near the Chinnaswamy Stadium to celebrate the team’s historic IPL win. However, the lack of adequate crowd control and coordination among security agencies led to chaos and panic, triggering a deadly stampede.

A state-appointed investigation committee was set up soon after the incident. Based on its findings, the report concluded that the senior police officers failed in their duty to ensure public safety despite prior knowledge of the massive gathering. The committee held them accountable for lapses in planning, crowd management, and emergency response.

Following the Central Government’s approval, disciplinary proceedings against the suspended officers are expected to follow. The move reflects a zero-tolerance approach towards administrative negligence, especially in high-risk public events.

The tragic event not only cast a shadow over RCB’s long-awaited IPL win but also raised serious concerns over public safety protocols during large gatherings in urban spaces.

Meanwhile, the state government has assured the families of the deceased that they will receive financial aid and necessary support. A detailed crowd control policy is also in the works to prevent such incidents in the future.
