Sports News : The 2026 FIFA World Cup is set to begin today, June 11, with Mexico City hosting the opening of what is being described as the biggest and most historic World Cup ever. The tournament is being jointly hosted by United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Historic Tournament
For the first time in FIFA World Cup history, 48 teams will compete in the tournament, an expansion from the previous 32-team format. A total of 104 matches will be played across 16 host cities in the three countries.
Sports experts believe the event will be more than just a football competition, serving as a global celebration of sport, culture, music, and international unity.
Grand Opening Ceremony
The tournament will officially open in Mexico City with a spectacular opening ceremony before the first match.
Several internationally renowned artists are expected to perform, with Shakira being the star attraction. Other performers include Burna Boy, J Balvin, Danny Ocean, Belinda, Lila Downs, Los Ángeles Azules, and Maná, who are expected to perform songs from the official FIFA World Cup 2026 album.
Massive Prize Money
The tournament will feature a total performance-based prize pool of $655 million.
Prize distribution includes:
Champions: $50 million
Runners-up: $33 million
Third Place: $29 million
Fourth Place: $27 million
In addition, every participating team will receive:
$10 million as qualification payment
$2.5 million as preparation support
Even the lowest-ranked team in the tournament is expected to earn approximately $21.5 million, highlighting the record-breaking financial scale of the competition.
