India News : Political turmoil has intensified within the All India Trinamool Congress> (TMC) following the party’s defeat in the West Bengal Assembly elections and its exit from power. Amid the internal rift, a faction of rebel MLAs has announced a new working committee and claimed to have appointed senior legislator Arup Roy as the party’s new national president.
Who is Arup Roy?
Arup Roy is a veteran politician from Howrah district in West Bengal. He began his political career in student politics and was initially associated with the student wing of the Congress Party.
When Mamata Banerjee founded the Trinamool Congress in 1998 after breaking away from Congress, Roy became one of her early and trusted associates.
Four-Time MLA
Arup Roy has been elected four consecutive times from the Howrah Central Assembly constituency, winning the 2011, 2016, 2021, and 2026 Assembly elections on a TMC ticket.
Over the years, he has served as a minister in successive Mamata Banerjee-led governments, handling portfolios such as Agricultural Marketing and Cooperation.
Known for Organizational Strength
Roy is regarded as one of the strongest organizational leaders in Howrah district. He served for years as the district president of the TMC and played a key role in strengthening the party’s grassroots network.
He earned a reputation as a crisis manager within the party for resolving internal disputes and maintaining unity among local workers.
Joins the Rebel Camp
In the latest political developments, Arup Roy has aligned himself with the rebel faction led by Ritabrata Banerjee. During a meeting in Kolkata, the rebel MLAs announced him as the new national president of the party.
Ritabrata Banerjee also stated that Mamata Banerjee would be welcome to serve as the party’s “Chief Advisor” if she wished.
New Working Committee Announced
The rebel faction announced the following office bearers:
- National President: Arup Roy
- Vice Presidents: Firhad Hakim, Rathin Ghosh, and Sabina Yasmin
- General Secretaries: Ritabrata Banerjee, Javed Khan, and Sandipan Saha
- Treasurer: Akhruzzaman Ansari
Election Commission to Be Informed
The rebel leaders claimed that the new working committee was constituted in accordance with the party’s constitution and said they would inform the Election Commission of India about the organizational changes.
They also stated that the names of district committees, the state unit, and party spokespersons would be announced soon.
However, the official TMC leadership has not accepted these claims, and no formal confirmation regarding the leadership change has been issued by the party.
