Why Does Lord Jagannath Fall Ill After Snana Purnima? The Story Behind the 15-Day Anasara Period

India News : Devotees eagerly wait all year for the grand Jagannath Rath Yatra held at the Shri Jagannath Temple in Puri. More than just a religious festival, the Rath Yatra is a magnificent celebration of faith, devotion, and centuries-old tradition. Every year, millions of devotees gather to seek the blessings of Lord Jagannath, his elder brother Lord Balabhadra, and sister Goddess Subhadra.

However, before the Rath Yatra begins, Lord Jagannath is believed to fall ill for 15 days, during which devotees are unable to have his darshan. This unique tradition is rooted in a deeply emotional and spiritually significant legend.

Anasara Begins After Snana Purnima

Before the Rath Yatra, the deities are ceremonially bathed on Snana Purnima, observed on the full moon day of the Hindu month of Jyeshtha. During this sacred ritual, Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Goddess Subhadra are bathed with water from 108 sacred pots.

According to religious belief, the elaborate ceremonial bath causes the deities to develop a fever. As a result, they retire from public view for 15 days to recover. This period is known as Anasara (or Anavasara). During this time, the sanctum sanctorum of the temple remains closed to devotees, while the deities are believed to undergo special care and treatment.

The Legend of Devotee Madhava Das

A popular legend explains the spiritual significance of this tradition.

It is believed that Madhava Das, a devoted follower of Lord Jagannath, was suffering from a severe illness for a long time. He prayed to the Lord for relief from his suffering. Lord Jagannath revealed that the illness was the result of karmas from Madhava Das’s previous birth and that he still had 15 days of suffering left before attaining freedom from the disease.

Unable to bear the pain of his devoted follower, Lord Jagannath is said to have taken upon Himself the remaining 15 days of Madhava Das’s illness. As a result, the devotee recovered completely, while the Lord Himself became unwell. Since then, it is believed that after Snana Purnima, Lord Jagannath falls ill and remains in seclusion for 15 days.

Traditional Herbal Treatment

During the Anasara period, the deities are not offered their regular food offerings. Instead, they are cared for according to traditional Ayurvedic practices. Special herbal medicines, medicinal decoctions, and preparations made from natural herbs are offered to help the Lord recover.

Nabayouvana Darshan and Rath Yatra

Once the 15-day recovery period ends, devotees are blessed with the Nabayouvana Darshan, marking the Lord’s return in a rejuvenated form. Soon after, Lord Jagannath, accompanied by Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra, embarks on the world-famous Rath Yatra, drawing millions of devotees from across the globe.

A Message of Devotion and Compassion

The story of Lord Jagannath’s illness is more than a religious belief—it symbolizes the boundless compassion between the Lord and His devotees. It conveys the message that true devotion can move even the Divine, who willingly bears the suffering of His devotees. This timeless tradition continues to make the Jagannath Rath Yatra one of the most cherished and spiritually significant festivals in India.
