Sports News : The 23rd Commonwealth Games concluded in Glasgow after an 11-day competition held from July 23 to August 2, featuring athletes from 74 countries across 13 sports.
India delivered an impressive performance, finishing fourth in the overall medal standings with a total of 39 medals, including 13 gold, 17 silver, and 9 bronze.
Boxing Leads India’s Medal Charge
Boxing emerged as India’s most successful sport at the Games. Indian boxers won 10 medals, including 7 gold medals, improving on their performance at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games, where they had secured seven medals.
Record-Breaking Performance in Athletics
Indian athletes also excelled in athletics, winning 16 medals—3 gold, 7 silver, and 6 bronze. The tally doubled India’s athletics haul from Birmingham 2022, where the country won eight medals, making it India’s best-ever athletics performance at the Commonwealth Games.
Judo Improves, Overall Performance Remains Strong
India also made progress in judo, securing four medals—2 gold, 1 silver, and 1 bronze—compared to three medals in the previous edition.
Although India’s medal count in weightlifting and para powerlifting declined compared to 2022, outstanding performances in boxing, athletics, and judo helped the contingent finish with an impressive overall tally.
Strong Showing Despite Absence of Six Major Sports
The 2026 Commonwealth Games did not include cricket, table tennis, wrestling, hockey, badminton, and squash—sports in which India had won 30 medals during the Birmingham 2022 Games.
Despite the exclusion of these traditional medal-winning disciplines, India still managed to win 39 medals, highlighting the country’s growing strength across a wider range of sports.
Ahmedabad to Host the Next Commonwealth Games
Following the successful conclusion of the Glasgow Games, attention now turns to India, which will host the 24th Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad.
During the closing ceremony, the Commonwealth Sports Flag was handed over to Indian Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra, who then presented it to Indian Olympic Association President P.T. Usha and Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi. India will now focus on delivering a successful edition of the Games while aiming for an even stronger performance as the host nation.
