Bihar News : The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Patna has emerged as a ‘Mini India’ in 2026, with students from 26 states, two Union Territories and neighbouring Nepal taking admission to different academic programmes.
Including admissions from the past four years, the IIT Patna campus now has representation from almost every state and Union Territory of the country. Students bring the cultural diversity, traditions and unique characteristics of their respective regions to the campus through various events and activities.
According to students, the presence of peers from across the country makes it easier to understand India’s cultural, political and geographical diversity, along with the social environment of different regions.
A total of 1,177 students have taken admission to undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD programmes at IIT Patna in 2026. The highest number of admissions, 620, has been recorded in BTech and BS courses.
1,177 Students Admitted Across Different Courses
Among the newly admitted students, 72 have joined the BTech-MTech dual degree programme, while 57 have enrolled in the BTech-BS MBA dual degree course.
In addition, 72 students have joined MSc programmes, 253 MTech, four MTech Research, 91 PhD and eight preparatory programmes.
UP and Telangana Lead BTech-BS Admissions
According to data from the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA), Uttar Pradesh and Telangana have the highest representation in IIT Patna’s BTech-BS courses in 2026, with 86 students each.
Bihar stands third, with 77 students out of the total 620 admitted to BTech and BS programmes this year. Andhra Pradesh follows with 69 students, Maharashtra with 60, Rajasthan with 35, Haryana with 30, West Bengal with 26 and Madhya Pradesh with 24 students.
Delhi and Gujarat have 20 students each, followed by Karnataka with 15 and Jharkhand with 13 students.
Admissions to undergraduate-level BTech-BS, BTech-MTech dual degree and BTech-BS MBA dual degree programmes are based on JEE Advanced ranks. The counselling process for these programmes is conducted by JoSAA.
Bihar Has Highest Overall Representation
When admissions across all programmes, including PhD courses, are considered, Bihar has the highest representation at IIT Patna in 2026.
Out of the total 1,177 students admitted this year, 271 are from Bihar. A major share includes 100 MTech and 63 PhD students.
Uttar Pradesh ranks second with 164 students, followed by Telangana with 111, Maharashtra with 93 and Andhra Pradesh with 87 students.
Students from several northeastern states have also joined IIT Patna. Assam has 20 students, while Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim have two students each. Mizoram and Nagaland have one student each.
One student from Nepal has enrolled in the MTech programme.
Dual Degree Students to Study at IIM Mumbai and Bodh Gaya
Students admitted to the BTech-BS MBA dual degree programme will complete their final three semesters at the Indian Institutes of Management (IIM) Mumbai and Bodh Gaya after completing seven semesters at IIT Patna.
Students enrolled in the dual degree programme will receive a management degree from an IIM without appearing for the Common Admission Test (CAT).
IIT Patna has signed an MoU with IIM Mumbai and IIM Bodh Gaya for the dual degree programme.

It is a matter of satisfaction for the institute that the entire country is represented here. Such diversity helps students understand the country in a holistic manner. Children share the traditions and culture of their respective states through various programmes from time to time,” said Prof. TN Singh, Director, IIT Patna.
