Patna: Despite Bihar’s liquor prohibition, another alleged liquor smuggling case involving a woman has come to light. After the recent arrest of Neha in Samastipur, a young woman identified as Riya was detained in Patna after police allegedly recovered a consignment of English liquor from her bags.
According to police, Riya had allegedly travelled from Uttar Pradesh to Patna by train carrying the liquor. She was intercepted while travelling on a motorcycle after leaving Patna Junction.
Police Acted on a Tip-Off
The incident took place under the jurisdiction of Kotwali police station in Patna. ASP Law and Order, Kotwali, Patna, Krishna Murari Prasad said police had received information that an illegal liquor consignment was expected to arrive near Patna Junction.
Following the information, police began surveillance in the area. During the operation, officers stopped a young woman travelling on a motorcycle along with some youths and conducted a search.
Liquor Worth Around Rs 14,000 Recovered
During the search, police allegedly recovered English liquor worth around Rs 14,000 from the woman’s handbag and shoulder bag. According to police, the bags contained bottles of more than half a dozen branded liquor varieties.
After recovering the liquor, police detained the woman and began questioning her.
Woman Claims She Was Offered Money
During questioning, the woman allegedly told police that an acquaintance had offered her money to transport the liquor. According to her statement, she travelled to Uttar Pradesh at the man’s request and returned to Patna by train carrying the liquor consignment.
She allegedly told police that she had been promised money for delivering the liquor to Patna. After reaching Patna Junction, she left the station carrying the bags and was later intercepted by police.
Police Investigating the Alleged Network
Police are now investigating the role of the man who allegedly persuaded the woman to transport the liquor. Officers are also trying to determine who was supposed to receive the consignment and whether other people were involved in the alleged smuggling operation.
According to police, the detained woman is a resident of Patna and belongs to a middle-class family. She is preparing for competitive examinations.
During questioning, she allegedly claimed that she had not been involved in liquor smuggling earlier and agreed to transport the consignment for the first time because of the promise of money.
Samastipur Woman Neha Was Earlier Arrested
Earlier, police had arrested a woman named Neha in connection with an alleged liquor smuggling case in Samastipur. She was allegedly travelling from Delhi to Bihar in an AC First Class coach carrying bottles of branded liquor.
It was also reported that her brother-in-law was travelling with her. Police were investigating the alleged liquor smuggling network in that case.
