Kolkata : The foundation stone for the proposed 2,000-bed Adani Arogya Mandir was laid at the Bengal Silicon Valley Tech Hub in New Town, Kolkata, on Thursday. Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani and West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari attended the foundation ceremony.
The project will be developed by the Adani Foundation as a not-for-profit medical institution. According to the project announcement, it will involve an investment of more than ₹4,000 crore, create about 10,000 jobs and cater to more than 2 lakh inpatients and over 20 lakh outpatients annually once operational.
2,000-Bed Healthcare Campus in New Town
The proposed Adani Arogya Mandir will be spread across 51.75 acres and is planned as a multi-speciality hospital with step-down and transitional care facilities.
The wider healthcare ecosystem will include a Meditel and Vishram Gruh to provide accommodation for relatives of patients receiving treatment at the hospital.
Gautam Adani said the proposed institution would have 2,000 beds, with 1,000 beds intended for economically weaker sections eligible under state and central government health insurance schemes.
The campus will also have a medical college with an annual intake of 150 undergraduate students, more than 100 postgraduate students and more than 40 super-specialists.
A College of Nursing and an institution for allied healthcare and paramedical education are also planned, along with residential facilities for healthcare professionals and their families.
Cancer Care to Be Focus in First Phase
In its first phase, the proposed multi-speciality hospital will focus on cancer care, with advanced tertiary and specialised healthcare services.
The project also envisages a research ecosystem covering genomics, precision medicine, biomedical informatics, artificial intelligence, clinical trials, molecular sciences and other applied biomedical sciences.
The proposed institution aims to connect scientific research with diagnosis, treatment and disease prevention. It also plans to collaborate with international partners on medical knowledge, technologies, clinical pathways and intellectual property.
The Adani Foundation has engaged Mayo Clinic Global Consulting in the United States and Singapore’s SingHealth for expertise in clinical care, academic medicine, digital health, quality, workforce development and innovation.
Adani Announces ₹1 Lakh Crore Bengal Investment Plan
During the event, Gautam Adani announced that the Adani Group plans to invest more than ₹1 lakh crore in West Bengal by 2035 across multiple sectors.
The areas identified include ports, logistics, renewable energy, power generation, power transmission and distribution, roads and bridges, green cement and hyperscale data centres.
Adani described West Bengal as the group’s “karmabhoomi” in the East and compared the state’s proposed role in the group’s expansion with Mundra in Gujarat.
Other Kolkata Initiatives
Alongside the group’s industrial and healthcare plans, Gautam Adani also announced support for the revitalisation of Kumartuli Ghat.
The group has also signed two MoUs with the West Bengal government relating to the restoration of the historic Writers’ Building and the promotion of Kolkata’s Durga Puja heritage through Adani Pujo Preview.
According to the announcement, the latter initiative will support puja organisers, artists, artisans, service providers and the wider cultural ecosystem of Bengal.
The proposed Adani Arogya Mandir is expected to provide a platform for the subsequent development of Centres of Excellence across various specialities and super-specialities in its second phase.
