Bihar News : Flood conditions have worsened in Akbarnagar and nearby areas of Bhagalpur district as the water level of the Ganga continues to rise. The Shrirampur Ring Embankment broke under heavy water pressure, submerging Shrirampur village and allowing floodwater to rapidly spread into several nearby villages.
More than 7,000 people have been directly affected by the flooding. The embankment breach triggered panic in Shrirampur and surrounding rural areas as water began entering homes.
Panic as Floodwater Enters Homes
Residents rushed to save their lives and gather essential household belongings before moving towards higher and safer locations. Several families have taken shelter on rooftops, while others are moving towards relief camps and main roads.
According to local residents, continuous rise in floodwater over the past several days had put enormous pressure on the ring embankment.
Villagers Tried to Save the Embankment
Villagers said they had been trying to protect the embankment since Sunday morning after noticing the heavy pressure of water. However, large cracks reportedly developed in the embankment by the afternoon.
The embankment eventually collapsed under the force of the water, allowing floodwater to spread rapidly into surrounding villages.
Villagers Allege Administrative Negligence
Local residents have alleged serious negligence by the district administration and officials of the Water Resources Department. They claimed that authorities had been informed about the increasing threat to the embankment in advance.
According to the villagers, no concrete steps were taken in time to strengthen, protect or repair the embankment. They alleged that thousands of residents are now facing the consequences.
Residents Await Government Assistance
People in the affected areas are currently searching for safe locations on their own and waiting for government assistance. Several families have already left their homes and moved towards higher ground, while others continue to look for shelter in safer places.
