India News : The Maharashtra government has imposed a complete ban on the manufacture, sale, storage, transportation, and distribution of analog paneer (non-dairy paneer) across the state. The decision has been taken in the interest of public health.
With this move, Maharashtra has become the second state in India, after Chhattisgarh, to prohibit analog paneer. The government has warned that anyone violating the ban will face strict action under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
Strict Penalties for Violations
According to the government, offenders may face:
- Up to six months’ imprisonment
- A fine of up to ₹1 lakh, depending on the seriousness of the offence
If the consumption of unsafe food results in a person’s death, the law provides for:
- Life imprisonment
- A minimum fine of ₹10 lakh
Ban Covers the Entire Supply Chain
An order issued on July 30 by Food Safety Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe states that the ban takes immediate effect and covers the entire supply chain, including:
- Manufacturing
- Processing
- Packaging
- Storage
- Transportation
- Wholesale distribution
- Retail sale
- Offering analog paneer for sale
Selling Analog Paneer as Dairy Paneer Will Invite Action
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has clarified that selling analog paneer while misrepresenting it as genuine dairy paneer will be treated as misleading consumers. Such practices will be considered an unfair trade practice under the Food Safety and Standards Act, and legal action will be initiated against violators.
Long-Standing Demand
The issue is not new. During the previous session of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, several legislators had demanded a complete ban on analog paneer. Acting on those concerns, the state government has now enforced the prohibition across Maharashtra.
Government’s Stand
The Maharashtra government has said that it will not compromise on matters related to public health. The complete ban on analog paneer, combined with strict penalties and enforcement by the FDA, reflects the state’s commitment to ensuring food safety and protecting consumers.
