Elephant Rampage in Hazaribagh: Six Killed, Including Four from One Family

Jharkhand News : Wild elephants wreaked havoc in Jharkhand’s Hazaribagh district late Thursday night, killing six people in a devastating incident. The tragedy occurred between midnight and 1 a.m. in Nanhutongri Tola of Gondwar village under the Churchu block, within the Daru forest range. A herd of five elephants entered the village and caused widespread destruction, plunging the entire area into mourning.

The victims have been identified as Dhaneshwar Ram (49), Suman Devi (28), Suraj Ram (52), Savita Devi (26), Savita’s husband Deepak Ram, and their two young children—Anurag Kumar (4) and Sanjana Kumari (10 months). Four members of the same family lost their lives, making the incident even more heart-rending.

According to eyewitnesses, villagers rushed out after receiving information that elephants had entered the settlement and tried to drive them away. During the chaos, one elephant separated from the herd and charged toward the crowd, triggering panic. While several villagers narrowly escaped, six people were trampled to death.

A child who was critically injured during the incident was rushed to Sadar Hospital in Hazaribagh, where he later succumbed to his injuries. Forest department teams reached the spot, worked with villagers to disperse the elephants, and chased them back toward the Kargi forests.

In the aftermath, the village remains engulfed in grief. Wails and cries echo through the lanes, residents are in shock, and every household is mourning the loss. Forest officials continue to camp in the area, keeping a close watch on the situation to prevent further incidents.
