India News : Several northwestern states, including the national capital Delhi, are likely to witness strong surface winds over the next few days. Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted rainfall across eastern, northeastern, and southern parts of the country on Wednesday. However, states reeling under intense heat may have to wait a little longer for major relief, as the southwest monsoon is expected to arrive by the end of May.
Monsoon Advancement Update
According to the IMD, conditions are becoming favorable for the further advancement of the southwest monsoon over the southeast Arabian Sea, Comorin region, southwest and southeast Bay of Bengal, and the Andaman Sea. The weather department has forecast that the southwest monsoon could reach Kerala by May 26.
Strong Winds Expected in Delhi and North India
Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh are likely to experience strong surface winds between May 20 and 25, with wind speeds reaching up to 40 kmph.
Light to moderate rainfall is also expected:
- Jammu and Kashmir: May 20–22
- Himachal Pradesh: May 21–22
- Uttarakhand: May 22–23
Delhi Crosses 45 Degrees Celsius
Delhi experienced its first major heatwave of the month on Tuesday, with temperatures crossing 45 degrees Celsius due to dry winds and scorching sunlight. The IMD has issued an orange alert warning of severe heatwave conditions in the coming days.
A heatwave is declared when the maximum temperature crosses 40 degrees Celsius and remains 4.5 to 6.4 degrees above normal. The weather department has extended the orange alert till May 25.
For Wednesday, the IMD has forecast a minimum temperature of 27 degrees Celsius and a maximum of 44 degrees Celsius in Delhi.
Rain Likely in Bihar and Jharkhand
The IMD has predicted rainfall in:
- Gangetic West Bengal and Odisha from May 20 to 23
- Bihar and Jharkhand from May 20 to 25
- Andaman and Nicobar Islands from May 20 to 25
- Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim from May 20 to 23
Heavy Rainfall Alert in Southern States
Northeastern India may witness scattered rainfall till May 21, while heavy rainfall is likely between May 22 and 25.
Kerala, Mahe, and Lakshadweep are expected to receive light to moderate rainfall from May 20 to 25. Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Mahe could witness very heavy rainfall between May 20 and 21. Lakshadweep may experience similar weather conditions on May 20.
